The National Space Centre Leicester

We were given a unique challenge from Graham Law, Chief Engineer at the National Space Centre: to stop rainwater leaks between the panels of the geodesic dome that houses the UK’s largest 360° planetarium. With no way to fasten to the ground and restricted rooftop access, this project demanded a creative, precision-engineered solution.

Our answer was a fully tailored external dome cover, manufactured from heavyweight flame-retardant PVC in our fabric workshop. We produced 75 individual triangular panels and assembled them into five large geometric segments, designed to perfectly fit the complex shape of the dome.

Once on site, the sections were joined using traditional Dutch lacing, creating a snug, seamless finish. The result was a watertight layer that not only solved the leak issue but also enhanced the dome’s resilience against the elements.

To secure the cover without ground anchoring, we built a bespoke ballast racking system that surrounded the dome. This galvanised steel structure was bolted together on site and filled with ballast to provide a solid hold.

To maintain consistent tension, ratchet assemblies were installed around the perimeter. These allow for easy adjustments over time, ensuring the cover remains tight and effective long term. A complex problem, smartly solved, exactly the kind of challenge we thrive on.

Precision Welding for Watertight Joints

  • Completely reliable, watertight joints were essential for long-term performance.
  • Achieved using our Fiab 800 high-frequency track welding machine.
  • Delivered strong, consistent welds across all segment seams.
  • Ensured a seamless finish that stands up to weather and time.
